These are the 10 "best practices" for making HegartyMaths work for you and your school.

10 Key Principles

1) Less is more.  Absolute focus on one quality homework a week, on a topic from last term to bolster long term memory (focus on notes, and questions with workings).

2) Students must mark their own work every single time for every single question.  No exceptions.

3) Have separate HM exercise books and quickly quality check them once a week (teachers should check for effort, self-marking, retrying questions, and note-taking).

4) Sanctions for non-homework (i.e. if it's not done, not completed or not done to the standard required).  Centralised detention systems are the most effective.

5) Celebrate success via the Markbook/Impact Report on a regular basis (e.g. leader board updated every two weeks and certificates given to top-performing students).

6) Investigate students not doing homework and ensure consistency of homework across the maths team.

7) To launch, show a lesson in class (e.g. clip 18) & model how to take notes and do homework.  Then set a nice, easy homework where the maths won’t be the limiting factor.  Then set the first REAL homework.

8) Share information with students (via assemblies) and parents (e.g. at an info evening) on what homework is; how it works; how they can do it well and what our aim is (good habits and improved long-term memory)

9) Access in school needs to be provided for disadvantaged students.

10) When set work is going well, introduce a Fix-Up Five once a week (first explain the concept of Deliberate Practice so students understand why Fix-Up 5s work), and Memri for retrieval practice.
